Ma. Mary’s Place is a project implemented by the Forum of Liberian Women Elders, a subsidiary of the Liberian Institute for “Growing” Patriotism (LIGP). The Institute is a duly registered NGO with the Government of Liberia. The group is run by a team of innovative, assiduous, inspiring, and professional retired Liberian women elders who are concerned about the drift of our youth and society. These women decided to come together to serve as the voice of reasoning and wisdom in Liberia.
The Forum launched a Women’s Center (Ma Mary’s Place) in honor of Ma Mary N. Brownell, who was a peace advocate and a fighter for women’s rights. The location of the Center will be on Ashmun Street, at the home of our late mother, Ma Mary. This Center is intended to:
- serve as a Museum, Research and Resource Center that will provide information and history of the role of Liberian women in Nation-building in the past 200 years. Emphasis will be on highlighting their response to the challenges of Nation-building that they faced.
- help in providing counseling, legal support and serving as an advocate for survivors of abuse.
- be transient referral safe house for women who are victims and survivors of abuse.
